What Happens If I Miss an ANC Appointment?

Go to Your Health Facility as Soon as Possible

If you have missed a scheduled ANC appointment, the most important thing you can do is go to your nearest health facility as soon as you can — ideally within the same week, and certainly within two weeks of the missed date. Do not wait for the next scheduled contact. Do not decide to "catch up" at the following appointment.

When you arrive, tell your health provider honestly that you missed your scheduled appointment and when your last ANC contact was. They will assess your current status, check your blood pressure, weight, and urine, review your ANC card, provide any treatments or vaccinations that were due at the missed visit, and schedule your next appointment.

You Will Not Be Judged for Missing a Visit

Health providers in Rwanda are trained to support women returning to ANC after a missed appointment without judgment. You will not be scolded, lectured, or treated differently for missing a visit. The goal of the health system is your wellbeing and your baby's health — barriers to attendance are understood to be real.

Common reasons for missing ANC appointments — transport challenges, distance, work or childcare responsibilities, illness, financial constraints, or simply forgetting — are recognised by health providers as part of the real context of maternal health in Rwanda. Be honest about why you missed the appointment; this helps your provider understand if any of these barriers need to be addressed to support your future attendance.

The Risks Associated With Missed Visits

Missing ANC visits does carry real health risks, which is why acting quickly on a missed appointment matters. The key risks are: undetected rising blood pressure (preeclampsia risk), missed supplement doses (anaemia and folate deficiency risk), missed IPTp-SP dose (malaria risk), and missed opportunity for growth monitoring (growth restriction risk).

The longer the gap between your last contact and attending again, the more monitoring opportunities are missed. However, one missed visit is far better than two or three, and attending late is always far better than not attending at all. No matter how many contacts you have missed, it is never too late to return to ANC care.

Warning Signs That Need Immediate Attention

If you have missed an ANC appointment and develop any of the following symptoms, do not wait to reschedule — go to your nearest hospital or health facility immediately: heavy vaginal bleeding; severe headache with visual changes; severe abdominal pain; fits or convulsions; your baby moving significantly less than usual (after week 28); fever above 38°C; or waters breaking before 37 weeks.

These signs require emergency assessment regardless of whether you have any scheduled appointment. Go directly to hospital — day or night — without waiting for your CHW or for a scheduled time.

How Ndarinzwe and Your CHW Can Help

Ndarinzwe is designed to help prevent missed appointments through reminders and care updates from your CHW. If you have upcoming ANC contacts, your dashboard shows your pregnancy stage and upcoming care milestones. Your CHW (Umujyanama w'ubuzima) can send you appointment reminders through the platform's messaging system.

If you know in advance that you will have difficulty making a scheduled appointment — due to transport, cost, or other reasons — contact your CHW beforehand. They may be able to help arrange community transport, accompany you, or flag the issue to the health facility so alternative arrangements can be explored.
